Day one of my internship 3/2/15
Today I worked with my mentor to help set up. I also participated in one of the games played today and in addition to that I lifted weights with one of his classes.
Finally I helped put everything away and am using this free hour to write my daily blogs.
Finally I helped put everything away and am using this free hour to write my daily blogs.
Day Two 3/3/15
Today I again helped set up. Instead of free lifting we went through a circuit, I participated in one class hour of this circuit. I then assisted some students in their circuit training as well.
day three 3/4/15
Today I helped set up everything. I stretched with all of the classes. Today we played a game for about half the class and then we just did free lifting.
day four 3/5/15
Today my mentor was at the doctors so I helped run the class with the sub. I first set every thing up and then started all the classes off with their warm up. After that I participated with in some of the activities that went on, such as lifting weights and playing with a frisbee, football etc.
Day five recap and reflection 3/6/15
Throughout this week I have done very repetitive actions, such as setting up and helping to put things away. Although I have done near the same things every day I am beginning to understand the basics of teaching and running a P.E class. In the past as a P.E student I have just thought that P.E was all fun and games and all that we did in that class was just so we were doing something active. I never realized that we are actually learning about safety and the treatment of others in the games we play. This has really been shown to me in the last week because the students in one class have been developing their own games and have been teaching them to each other and playing them, The way these games work is they have to follow certain guidelines; is there some sort of action taking place(running, jumping, etc.), does it take skill to play(throwing , catching, kicking, etc.), are there safety guidelines, does it work the brain at all through scoring. These skills being used in the games are helping to develop good habits for the students later in life. This past week I have been thinking of what I am going to do for my project, I have an idea at the moment and I am still working out the kinks but I will be developing a team sports curriculum and writing a test that I will ask students to take at the beginning and end of each quarter I teach the class. Throughout this next week I will be developing a test on team sports for my mentor to not only see the development of his students but also to see my own growth throughout this internship. This past week has been really fun in what I have been doing; I get to participate in assisting with all the activities be it from lifting weights to helping set up some student made games. The internship so far has been really helpful for me to understand what our teachers at Animas have to go through every day to make our lives as simple and straight forward as possible. Throughout this last week I have decided what team sport I am going to do for my project, begun thinking on some technique drills, helped set up in the mornings, helped put everything back in the afternoons, lifted weights with some students and helped set up some student made games.
Day six 3/9/15
Today I helped to get every thing set up for the day. Then I worked out with some students and in fourth hour I graded some tests and wrote them in the grade book. Finally I played one of the student made games to help make the teams even.
day seven 3/10/15
Today I helped to set every thing up. Today in the strength and conditioning classes we did a circuit and I helped to set that up and I participated in one class hour of the circuit. finally in the last hour of the day I participated in one of the student made games and than helped put everything away.
day eight 3/11/15
Today I did not need to help set up anything because there was nothing to be set up. Today in the first hour the students had PARC testing, so I had a free hour to work on my project. Finally i participated in the last hours game so that i would make the teams even.
week two recap 3/15/15
This week has been really insightful, I have learned many things about teaching a class such as; patience, humor, and attention. At the beginning of each day I help to set everything up and get prepared for the coming activities. During the course of this week I have adjusted what my project will consist of. I have altered it so that it will not just be an ultimate Frisbee class but team sports in general. This ranges from football to soccer and many others not involving a ball. I have been asked by my mentor to develop a test for him on team sports that consists of 50 questions that from which he will choose 35 to have on his test. I am going to use this as a part of my project to show as another piece of evidence of my work with my mentor. The past week I have really developed some skills that I think will be useful in a teacher’s position, these consist of: cooperation, encouragement, and motivation through consequences. The last one in that list might not make much sense but it means that teachers can use the students extracurricular activities as a reason to do well in school, this works best with athletes because of ineligibility rules, but in a small school like Dolores or Animas high school the teachers use power school and talk to each other on a daily basis, and this allows a better liked teacher to motivate the students that might be failing a different class by bringing up ineligibility or other negative consequences of failing grades, this isn't as prevalent at Animas because we don’t have any P.E teachers but can be held true throughout most schools. I have really enjoyed working with my mentor and being able to learn about what a teachers life is like in school hours and how stressed they can get. In the classes that I have been working with, my mentor uses heart rate monitors to make sure that all of his students are doing what they are supposed to be doing, I think that most core classes should have a similar way of monitoring the students effort in each of their classes. The heart rate monitors are matched with sheets that the students fill out to tell my mentor what they did if their heart rate did not meet the required goal.
day nine 3/16/15
Today I did not need to set anything up. I first stretched with one class hour and then I lifted weights with some of the other class hours. Finally I assisted in some clean up work that needed to be done in the wrestling room, and then I played a game with the final class hour to help make the teams even.
day ten 3/17/15
Today I helped to set everything up. Then I worked with some of the students on their testing. Finally in the last hour I ran the pacer with the students.
day eleven 3/18/15
Today I helped set everything up. For the first half of the day my mentor was not here so I helped to run the class and helped students finalize some of their testing. Finally, I ran the pacer again and improved the amount I got in the second to last hour.
day twelve 3/19/15
Today I helped set up with the final day of testing. Later I helped students in their lifting tests. Finally I played the game with the students in the last hour. Today is the last full day of my internship, tomorrow is a half day because they have a professional development day
Day thirteen 3/20/15
Today Is another professional development day at Dolores High School so Today has been a work day for me.

mentor Interview
Why did you become a Coach/Teacher?
Initially, I feel as though I was born into coaching. My father was a coach for over twenty-five years and he started me coaching at the age of fourteen. As I grew older I knew I wanted to make teaching my profession because it was a chance for me to build relationships, and give back to society by trying to help young people become people of character, integrity and empathy. Building meaningful relationships as a teacher/coach requires that get to know someone on a personal level, and that you are willing to learn from them as much as you teach them.
Why do you continue to be a Teacher and Coach?
Because I love what I do! Every day presents new challenges and at the end of the day I feel as though I have given back more than I received from the young people that I have come into contact with. At this point in my life I could not imagine doing anything else as a profession.
What is your favorite part about Teaching and Coaching?
There are really two parts; watching someone apply what I have taught them and having success, and building relationships with the young people I am in contact with. Whether it’s teaching a wrestling move, how to maintain their health, or how to act with integrity and character, I get an inner sense of joy when I see a young person apply what I have taught them. Sometimes I will not see the results of my impact for ten to twenty years later, and then I know I have done my part to contribute to society, and that’s where the relationship building really comes into play.
Who or what got you interested in Coaching and Teaching?
My father for coaching, he was nominated three times for Community Man of the Year, and the recipient once, for his work with children in our community. I have to say that there were probably a dozen teachers through the years that made a significant impact on my life. From Mrs. Adams in the third grade to Gene Taylor at Fort Lewis, these were people who put faith in my abilities, fostered personal relationships and showed me a better way. Now I feel it is my turn to pay it forward.
Do you have a Philosophy for Teaching and Coaching?
My Mission Statement is as follows: My mission is to help young people become positive, productive and empathetic members of society through the vehicle of sports and physical education.
If yes, how did you develop your philosophy?
Contrary to popular belief, sports do not teach character and integrity on their own. Just look at the world of professional sports today; trash talking, show-boating, criminal records, drug violations, contract disputes and the list goes on and on. One can say that without proper guidance and instruction sports teaches just the opposite of integrity and empathy; self-centeredness and egocentricity. I feel that I can make the greatest impact on young people’s lives as a coach. It is our job as teachers/coaches to help young people learn these valuable life lessons that are not being taught elsewhere.

Project description
My internship will be with a P.E teacher at the high school in Dolores Colorado, as a P.E teacher my mentor helps to keep the youth of the community in good physical shape. My mentor is Leo Garand; he was my middle school wrestling coach and has been many different types of teachers. I hope that he will be able to teach me the skills necessary to write a curriculum and teach a group of people that are my current age.
My academic goals for this internship are; to learn what teachers go through every day to make the learning environment easily engaged by the youth. Also, I hope to learn some more about the teaching process and what goes into the planning. My personal goal for this internship is to become better at certain physical activities. One of my career goals is to simply find out if teaching P.E is something I would be interested at some point in my life.
My project for this internship is going to be a semester long curriculum that I will be developing with the help of my mentor. This curriculum is going to be a team sports curriculum. I have decided to use soccer, basketball, football, ultimate Frisbee, and street hockey as the five base sports for my curriculum. I will also be developing a fifty question final for my mentor’s end of school final exam. Along with this, I will be doing some personal research on a sporting goods store’s website and try to develop a price range for some team sports equipment.
For this project I believe I will have to do little to no research on curriculums before I begin. Although, I may try to look up some pictures of curriculums on line before I start to design my own. Some possible research that might be necessary would be; what are the five most liked team sports, general information on my five chose sports, or even what is the most effective way to talk to students.
One step I will take to make sure I complete the project over the course of the internship is to set some personal weekly deadlines. I currently do not have these deadlines in place because I am unsure as of what the process of completing this project will go like. Some of the only resources I will need on this project are my computer and some teaching books that my mentor has that will assist in the making of my curriculum.

Project proposal
For the LINK internship I will be an intern with a P.E. coach at Dolores High/Middle School. My mentor teaches a variety of classes ranging from strength and conditioning to team sports. His mission is to keep the youth of today in good physical condition by stimulating their muscular strength and endurance. My mentor is a strong personality in his place of work and offers guidance to students and teachers alike. I hope that this person can teach me new ways of interacting with people my age as an authority figure; I also anticipate learning new techniques for other peoples exercise plans as well as my own. My academic goals for this internship are to gain insight on how life is like in the eyes of a teacher. This is one of my goals because I would like to better understand what teachers go through every day that we as students cannot see from where we sit in the classroom. Another personal goal is to improve my overall fitness level by connecting with the students through exercises that I will participate in with them. For my internship project I will be designing a team sports curriculum that gives a certain understanding of some team sports and how they are played. Along with my main project I will be developing a fifty question test that my mentor will use as his personal final exam. From this project I hope to learn what skills it takes to develop not only what it takes to write a test but also a semester long curriculum. To complete my LINK project I will need to develop a basic understanding of a team sports class and how to keep high school students active in a world where not having to move for anything is becoming the norm. To complete this project I will need to spend the first week of my internship watching and nurturing new ideas to help progress my final project. The final two weeks of my internship I will need to start writing the final exam and begin developing my curriculum. While setting up my internship I ran into one glaring problem, I needed to fill out some paper work for the Dolores School District when I had school and athletics only in Durango. The way I overcame this challenge was by getting released from Animas High School at lunch and then driving myself to Dolores to meet with my mentor and then to fill out all needed paper work to be accepted by the Dolores School District. Right now I feel that I am a little unprepared for what it will be like in a different school with all new people. On the other side I am also really excited for what my internship will teach me about physical education and what a large impact it has on the community. I think that being at my internship for three weeks will be a bit odd in the beginning but will eventually grow on me so that I will thoroughly enjoy the area and the people I have met in my experiences.
