Perception
My previous place of dwelling was in California, where the rest of the country (not residing in California) believes us to be just lazy surfers that have long careless hair with nothing better to do. While in fact, some to most of the residents in California are hard, enduring workers. This socialization has made me strive to perform at my highest in a multitude of ways (sports, school, games, and life in general. This socialization force is “the looking glass self”.
The backdrop on my mask or the color scheme of the red paint and the reflective surface are symbolizing how I chose to perceive my-self (red paint) and how others evaluate my actions and emotions (reflective). Others opinions and commentary have shown me what they see me as. With those opinions, I have been able to create an outer shell that portrays what others wish to see from me. While the inner layers that make up the rest of me are only shown to a select few, those layers are shown primarily to only those who have been large socializers from the start. In my personal experience, I have always tried to duplicate those actions found cool in this current day and age.
The sports equipment shown on both sides of the mask are and will be socializers for a long while. They represent how sports have given others and me a more validated opinion on what I participate in, some of these affects have been respect, dedication, and to persevere. My identity has been highly changed ever since I fully participated in sports in 4th grade and on until now. These activities have become part of my daily routine and life style; they are now a large part within my identity and my bodily image. The speedometer where my eye should be on the reflective side is one of the ways I would be judged in my physical ability, speed, strength, and balance. I have not always been the fastest person, so when sports came along I was and are being hassled here and there about my speed and other physical capabilities. This lack of speed has pushed me to work harder than every-one else for self-gain
The food items Shown on either side of my mask resemble how others and I judge me based on food. The hamburger is representing how much I go out to eat and where I go out to eat, while the carrot is symbolizing what I eat at home and what I do not eat at home. This is important to me because although I eat healthy my weight stays the same. I wonder why? I think it may have some-thing to do with the fact that I am usually working out in one way or another. I have always been judged by what I have eaten for most of my life this judgment is what I would call “looking glass self.”
The animals shown on my mask are the types of animals I have had as a pet those two animals would be dogs and a turtle. The dogs I have had for years and everyone knows that I have had dogs, but the turtle is a new addition to my family and my personal pet that I am responsible for. This responsibility has reminded me that Animas and life are not going to be easy and that I have to work for the great things.
Finally, the string that will be suspending the mask in the air will be in resemblance to my spirituality and how with-out the one god I would be falling forever into a never-ending abyss. Without this one attachment, my mask or my identity perhaps would shatter never to become complete again.
When the looking glass concept was taught in Jessica’s humanities class, I had some issues at first understanding this concept, but now through this project I have developed a greater understanding of how it works in correlation to socialization. This is the sole concept that has pushed many people as well as America to become excellent, this idea of sorts is that our self-image is that based upon what others see us as, a jock, a nerd, a drug addict, a band player, a geek, or a drama person. In addition, this gave me a better understanding on how I was molded to be who I am.

mask reflection
The mask project is a showing of our gained knowledge of sociology and how it affects us every day. The sociology content we were taught was based off college level texts and readings so we have absorbed a hefty amount of knowledge within this session of the school year. The mask portion of this project was a large part because there as a flurry of days of thought and work put into this simple mask to make it become our own. While the essay was, also a huge part did not take as much time as the mask because it was written on a computer and printed in comparison to a handmade plaster mask. Some of the most important lessons I learned about the society we are living in are, that everyone we meet and interact with affects us. In addition, the other large lesson learned throughout this project is that although people may not know it they are choosing their identity by what they believe others see them as. I learned that I have a more hidden personality than I really thought. I can improve as a “projecteer” by creating a more developed project that could draw the public’s attention with greater interest.
